Houston, we have a problem!

Our classmates surprise us with a fantastic science fiction comic based on the Apollo 13 odyssey and a videogame set in “Mario Bros”. (Click here to play the video game)

Do not stop reading it and playing! Although, we regret it … only in Spanish.

Benefiting from coding in the space science

We mentioned how we taught the space area career opportunities to the students in the previous blog. And today I wrote about how to integrate technology in space area works.

Have a nice reading!

In the last years, it is claimed that teaching coding is even more important than teaching foreign language. I think we can integrate coding and space areas which are very important two things for our students’ future according to me. As you know that, before high school the students are taught block based coding.

Block based coding is used both it is enjoyable for the students and to give the basis of coding. I gave information to six different classes about space science by using Kodu Game Lab and Minecraft Education Edition in my school.

The students design either the planets which are chosen as a theme or their dreamy planets and they transformed it a game. As playing the games that they made themselves, unawares they learnt a lot of things about science.

The results were really satisfying…

On the other hand in high schools, there aren’t many opportunities to use block based coding. We made some applications by using the students’ coding abilities. This time, I asked students to design educational software that give basic information about science. While they were doing it, they learnt a lot of things about science. In fact the idea that somebody else uses that software made them to do it impeccable.

So I think I gave them the information about space by using coding again.

If you can share your coding works with us, I will be very happy about it.

Life in Space

And… at least… Life in Space Trailer!

Our colleagues, the Life in Space team, have presented us with their film project.

Soon we will have it on our screens.

Surely it is an impressive production!

Space Awareness

Dear readers, I send you my best wishes.

I am the Turkish co-operator of Apollo 21 project, Selçuk Arslan.

I want to share you some information about the career opportunities of space area. Have a nice reading!

We are predicting that most of the known occupations won’t exist in near future. Because of that for the future we can count space as one of the popular working areas.

In the space week we made a study in the school. We presented the space area occupations to the students. There were many interesting occupations like Space Weather Scientists, Astrobiologist, Ground Segment Engineers, Aerospace Engineers, Space Writers, Astronaut Costume Designers, and Space Educators. After we gave some information about these occupations we made a voting in the school. We asked the most interesting 3 occupations to the students.

We invited Ms. Arzu DONAT who is career specialist in space industry to introduce the occupations that were determined after the voting. She made a presentation about the occupations that the students found interesting. After the presentation, she answered the students’ questions. It was a different activity for the students who exhausted from the intense school subjects. We gave the name of “Space Girls” to this work. We chose that name because our school is a girls’ vocational school.

We send this project, which we carry out with our school’ internal resources, to Space Awareness Competition. This project won the runner-up price in the global category. “Excellent Space Science School” badge was send to our school. I hope this project will become an example for the other schools for the aim of to show the career opportunities of space area. As teachers we must prepare our students to the future and by doing that we mustn’t ignore new trends in life.

CANSAT

CanSat is an educational project that seeks to teach STEM disciplines using space as context. The challenge is simple: can you build a satellite that fits in a soda can? If you like challenges, do not hesitate. Form a team of four to six members, look for a teacher as motivated as you are and on the go!

Apollo 21 has presented its project to participate in this interesting event. We are looking forward to the resolution, but, whatever happens, we will keep trying.

Apolo XXI misión solidaria/Apollo 21 solidarity mission

Draft: what the cups will look like.

One of the objectives of this project is to make known, connected with the Apollo Missions, some achievements of space exploration. The exploration of space aims to respond to the human concern to search for knowledge and answers, but at the same time, it has an impact on society, in the form of research and technological progress.

In addition to this, from Apollo 21 Mission we want to join the solidarity campaign that is being carried out in our school, through the Juntos Mejor Foundation, Dar Tika project (Tangier), which works with girls in situations of risk.

We will sell cups with the logo of the project. The full price of each cup will be for this solidarity project.

¡Buen trabajo! ¡Suerte en la aventura!

Blogmasters Team: Flavia, Alejandra and Elena

We present the spaceship’s crew that, in addition to taking charge of developing their own project, will be responsible for managing the blog.

In addition, this team participated in the interviews conducted.

Good job! Good luck in the adventure!
